Rating The Champ: Seth Rollins

Welcome to a new series on the website, called Rating The Champ. This will follow my prior World Title Series, where I reviewed each and every WWE Heavyweight Champion in history from Hulk Hogan’s first title win in 1984 all the way to the current days. Money in the Bank cash-ins will not be included for obvious reasons, unless it was a proper match (ie: Rob Van Dam at One Night Stand 2006). In this new series, I will rate all the PPV matches from each and every WWF/E Heavyweight Champion in history. To be fair, since this is the WWF/E title, I’ll only rate their PPV matches in the WWF/E. In this edition, we’ll be looking back at the PPV career of the one and only, former WWE & Universal Champion, Seth Rollins.

5. Ryback & Team Hell No (TLC 2012)

While still reigning as NXT Champion, Seth Rollins and The Shield made their debut at Survivor Series the prior month, costing Ryback the WWE Title. During the next number of weeks on TV, they went after numerous wrestlers – notably the then-tag champs Team Hell No, setting the stage for (a violent) debut match in a TLC bout at the eponymous PPV.

The Shield managed to use their numbers advantage to stay on top, constantly being able to avoid the big men’s strength and Bryan’s quickness by just working as a unit. The end saw The Shield win, despite Rollins dying a couple of minutes earlier after Ryback threw him off a giant ladder through a number of tables on the stage.

This has to be the most important match in the careers of all Shield members, individually and as a stable too.

4. The Wyatt Family (Elimination Chamber 2014)

Fast forward fourteen months, to a point where The Shield – particularly Reigns and Dean – were starting to fall apart, while Seth was trying to keep them together. To say this wasn’t the best time to face the dangerous Wyatt Family would be a huge understatement.

Seth was the ultimate babyface-in-peril in this bout, bumping all over the place and building up hot tags while using his speed to avoid the monsters. Ultimately, Reigns and Ambrose couldn’t work together, and that is what allowed the smart Bray Wyatt to hit the Sister Abigail on Reigns for the win.

3. Cody Rhodes & Goldust (Battleground 2013)

As good as athletics and technique are in wrestling, there’s nothing better than good storytelling with engaging characters. When you put them all together, magic happens and it reminds us why we keep watching the sport. That was this match.

With Cody Rhodes and Goldust fighting for their family against The Authority, the six amazing workers involved (including Dean and ‘The Dream’) created a moment fans will never forget – a simple old-school tag match full of emotion, and Dusty’s last great moment in the business. Simply spectacular.

2. Evolution (Extreme Rules 2014)

Now as babyfaces, the stable started a program with Evolution immediately after WrestleMania XXX. Triple H, Randy Orton and Batista had last worked together as a team on the May 3rd edition of RAW in the year 2004. Ten years and one day later, at Extreme Rules on May 4th in the year 2014, they were back to wrestle The Shield.

Rollins, as usual, played the babyface-in-peril role throughout most of the bout. The Shield beat the legendary faction after Rollins launched himself off the concourse onto Triple H and Orton while Reigns finished Batista inside the ring. The following month would see them beat Evolution again, before disbanding the following night on RAW.

1. Brock Lesnar, John Cena (Royal Rumble 2015)

Now no longer a member of The Shield, Rollins needed *that* first match on his own. He needed a match that would do to him what TLC 2012 did for The Shield. At Night of Champions in September 2014 he got involved in the Brock Lesnar/John Cena rivalry, setting the stage for a match at Royal Rumble 2015. One that would turn out to be *that* match.

Rollins and Cena smartly tried to avoid Lesnar as much as possible, constantly tossing him to the outside and trying to keep it one-on-one, only for the machine Lesnar to keep getting back in and take control. It looked like Brock’s broken ribs would take the belt off of him, as Rollins even pulled the Phoenix Splash, but ‘The Beast’ pinned Seth after the F5 to retain.

The real winner, however, was without any question Seth Rollins, who proved in his first big main-event title match that he belongs there.

5. Daniel Bryan (Royal Rumble 2014)

The Bray Wyatt character made his debut in the summer of 2013, and this was only his fourth PPV match up until that point. Wyatt started the feud with Bryan after Hell in a Cell 2013, with Bryan at one point even joining The Family only to then attack Wyatt inside the cage in that awesome moment on RAW.

The two had a spectacular match at Royal Rumble 2014, which ultimately saw Wyatt catch Bryan with a Sister Abigail into the barricade on the outside followed by another inside for the win.

This was Wyatt’s biggest win in his entire career up until that point, as well as a fantastic bout itself.

4. Daniel Bryan (Royal Rumble 2020)

Fast forward six years, these two were once again wrestling each other. This time for the Universal Title, with Wyatt as his ‘Fiend’ gimmick, and in a Strap Match – which has to be a tough gimmick match to work.

Bryan eventually managed to make the people buy his nearfalls after taking a beating with the strap, and when he finally exploded with his own shots with the strap the crowd absolutely exploded… only for Fiend to put him in the Mandible Claw and win.

3. SmackDown vs. RAW (Survivor Series 2016)

The participants were: AJ Styles, Dean Ambrose, Bray Wyatt, Randy Orton & Shane McMahon for SmackDown ; Kevin Owens, Chris Jericho, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins & Braun Strowman for RAW.

Wyatt and Orton had just recently formed ‘The New Wyatt Family’, and they were the final two for SmackDown against RAW’s Reigns and Rollins. Orton eliminated Rollins with the RKO, before taking a bullet for a team and eating Reigns’ Spear, allowing Wyatt to hit the Sister Abigail for the win.

2. The Shield (Elimination Chamber 2014)

After Bray’s win over Daniel Bryan at Royal Rumble, him and his Family took on The Shield at Elimination Chamber during a time The Shield were teasing a breakup.

The Wyatt Family took advantage of that, ending with Wyatt pinning Roman Reigns after a fantastic finishing sequence between all six men.

1. Elimination Chamber Match (Elimination Chamber 2017)

The participants were Bray Wyatt, John Cena, AJ Styles, The Miz, Dean Ambrose and Baron Corbin. The match was for Cena’s WWE Championship.

Wyatt came in fourth, surviving until the final three alongside Cena and Styles, pinning both men to win the match and capture his first WWE Championship.

5. John Cena (Extreme Rules 2012)

After WrestleMania XXVIII, Brock Lesnar came back to wrestling for the first time since his bout with Kurt Angle in 2007. He attacked John Cena in his first night back, starting a feud between the two.

In the match’s first minute, Lesnar immediately made Cena bleed and just proceeded to kill him from bell to bell, using the most lethal of weapons in this exreme rules bout : his own hands.

That is until the end, where Cena for some reason wins the match with a single AA into the steps to beat Brock in his first match back… only to lose to John Laurinaitis at the next PPV. That was indeed a thing that happened.

4. Fatal 4 Way Match (SummerSlam 2017)

At this point, Lesnar had been the Universal Champion since WrestleMania, having retained against Samoa Joe the prior month. Meanwhile, Reigns and Strowman had been feuding for ages and they were added to the title match as well.

Brock did a spectacular job of making Braun Strowman look like a badass in this match, being overpowered by him numerous times and even taking two Powerslams through the table.

Near the end, Lesnar made his way back in the ring and took advantage of the fact Braun had been taken out for a while, hitting Reigns with the F5 to retain.

3. Triple Threat Match (Royal Rumble 2015)

Back at SummerSlam 2014, Lesnar had murdered John Cena to win the WWE Title, and Seth Rollins got involved in their rematch at Night of Champions the following month to set up this match.

Brock at this point was an absolute monster, and both challengers sold him like a big deal and tried to take him out of the match as much as possible.

After breaking Lesnar’s ribs and taking him out on the floor, Brock made his way back in and took out both guys before putting Seth away with the F5 for the win to retain.

2. Kurt Angle (WrestleMania XIX)

Despite being a former WWE Champion already, Brock Lesnar needed this. He had spent most of his career in WWE up until that point working “main event WWE style matches” with the likes of Undertaker and Big Show, but Lesnar was an amateur wrestling champion.

His opponent, Kurt Angle, was an olympic Gold Medal winner in amateur wrestling. This was exactly the style Lesnar needed to prove how damn good he is (and boy is he great), and there was no better opponent than Angle.

The match tells a great story and is a technical masterpiece, and had it not been for that ending it could’ve been number one on this list.

1. CM Punk (SummerSlam 2013)

In his first year back to wrestling in WWE, Lesnar had won two matches out of four. To say John Cena and (especially) Triple H didn’t need to be the ones beating Brock so early in his second run would be the understatement of the decade.

Lesnar needed a new opponent, a fresh match: enter CM Punk. Not only was the story with Paul Heyman fantastic, but also the match was believable and engaging from start to finish.

Lesnar dominated Punk, as he should’ve, and Punk was only able to fight back after taking advantage of where he was (ie: the ringpost). The ending saw Punk almost get the big babyface win, only for Heyman to get involved and get his ass kicked, which then allowed Lesnar to kill Punk with the chair followed by the F5 for the academic win.

For the record, this is not my favorite Brock Lesnar match ever, that would be the Iron Man bout with Angle on SmackDown – however, do not forget, these pieces only look back at PPV matches.

Rating The Champ: Goldberg

5. Triple H (Survivor Series 2003)

To say Bill Goldberg’s WWE run wasn’t particularly the greatest would be the understatement of the century. Making the man sell for over ten minutes was a horrible idea, because not only was he bad at it, but also his character didn’t need it at all.

However, at least in this match Goldberg’s comeback made him look like a million bucks. He kicked the sledgehammer out of Triple H’s hands, destroyed the rest of Evolution with it, tossed it down and symbolically finished Hunter with his usual moves.

Let’s just ignore Triple H ended up pinning Goldberg anyway the following month, therefore making this match not mean as much.

4. The Rock (Backlash 2003)

Bill Goldberg arrived in WWE immediately after WrestleMania XIX, to feud with The Rock. He speared Rock right into tomorrow, and the two wrestled at Backlash.

The problem of having Goldberg sell for a long time was still there, but at least The Rock was there to cover those parts with his incredible charisma and over-the-top selling of Goldberg that made him look dangerous the whole time.

The Rock ultimately gets a little bit too cocky, which allows Goldberg to kill him with two consecutive Spears followed by the Jackhammer.

3. Elimination Chamber Match (SummerSlam 2003)

The participants were Goldberg, Randy Orton, Kevin Nash, Chris Jericho, Shawn Michaels and Triple H. The match was for Hunter’s World Championship.

This was without any question, the match that made Goldberg look more badass in his first WWE run… until the end, that is. Goldberg was the last to enter, with Nash already gone.

In five or six minutes, he absolutely murdered and eliminated Orton, Michaels and Jericho only for Triple H to then pin Goldberg with a single sledgehammer shot.

2. Chris Jericho (Bad Blood 2003)

The build-up to this match saw Jericho constantly being able to avoid Goldberg, and running away after getting his little cheapshot in.

Once the bell rings, Goldberg is finally able to get his hands on Jericho and his aggression eventually gets the better of… Goldberg. He knocks himself out going for a Spear through the barricade, injuring his shoulder.

Jericho works on that shoulder for a couple of minutes, until Goldberg makes the inevitable comeback. However, the Spear hurts him as well, and allows Jericho to put him in th Walls. Goldberg absolutely explodes out of that, though, and puts him away with another Spear followed by the Jackhammer.

1. Brock Lesnar (WrestleMania 33)

Remember their absolutely horrible and long match at WrestleMania XX? This was the total opposite, and that’s exactly why it was much, much, much, much, MUCH better.

From the moment the match started, the two bulls went after each other with their signature moves. They destroyed each other, destroyed the barricade at ringside and then went home. Short, simple and effective.

In the end, Lesnar became the first man to kick out of the Jackhammer and beat Goldberg cleanly. What would’ve happened way back in 2004, had Lesnar not decided to leave.

5. Roman Reigns (Payback 2017)

After the 2016 Draft, it was obvious Braun Strowman was about to receive the push of his life. That is until his streak ended at the hands of Roman Reigns at Fastlane (of all places), and losing the Battle Royal at the WrestleMania 33 pre-show to Mojo Rawley (of all people). Just like that, fans were getting flashbacks to guys like Heidenreich.

This match against Roman Reigns at Payback came at the perfect time, putting Braun right back on the map before it was too late. He took advantage of Reigns’ injured shoulder to pick up the victory, destroying Reigns after the match was over as well.

This was unquestionably one of Braun’s most important matches of his entire career.

4. Money in the Bank 2018

The other participants were Kevin Owens, Rusev, Bobby Roode, Finn Bálor, The Miz, Samoa Joe and Kofi Kingston.

Braun was not only the winner of this match (which was a horrible idea, but that’s a topic for another day), he was also one of the highlights. Everyone started going after Braun, taking him out with ladders on the outside.

He tried to make numerous comebacks but was unsuccessful most of the times, before finally exploding and running over everyone to capture the briefcase. He was also involved in the most memorable spot of the match, absolutely killing Kevin Owens by tossing him off the ladder through some tables.

3. RAW vs. SmackDown vs. NXT (Survivor Series 2019)

Braun spent this match doing big things and teasing big confrontations with NXT wrestlers like WALTER and Keith Lee, only to be stopped by other heels.

He finally made his big comeback train around the ring around ten minutes into the match, but Keith Lee was enough to stop him and take him out via count-out.

Braun did a good job here of putting over Keith Lee, was protected in defeat and his team still won the match despite his elimination.

2. RAW vs. SmackDown (Survivor Series 2016)

The participants were Universal Champion Kevin Owens, Chris Jericho, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins & Braun Strowman for RAW ; WWE Champion AJ Styles, Dean Ambrose, Bray Wyatt, Randy Orton & Shane McMahon for SmackDown.

Braun came into this match still undefeated, having destroyed every single one of his opponents since the Draft in July. As soon as he tagged in, he stopped Dean Ambrose’s dive in mid-air and proceeded to murder Shane McMahon as well.

Braun eliminated Dean Ambrose with the Powerslam, the number-one contender to the WWE Championship at the time, no less. Just a few minutes later, he was the victim of an RKO on the floor, while James Ellsworth prevented him from beating the count and eliminating him.

1. Fatal 4 Way (SummerSlam 2017)

At this point, it was clear Roman Reigns would battle Brock Lesnar at the following year’s WrestleMania. Meanwhile, Reigns had been feuding with Braun Strowman for months, while Samoa Joe had been in a superb program with Lesnar two months earlier.

Braun started the bout confronting Lesnar, actually getting the better of him. He then killed BOTH Joe and Reigns by tossing a chair at them, before putting Lesnar out for a while with a couple of Powerslams through the table.

A Spear from Reigns finally stopped Braun, and Lesnar took advantage of that little moment with Braun down to hit the F5 on Reigns to retain. This was by far the match that made Braun look like a f*cking monster the most, and without any question his best match so far for the current ‘Blueniversal’ champion.

5. MITB Ladder Match (Money in the Bank 2019)

The other participants were Baron Corbin, Finn Bálor, Ricochet, Andrade, Ali and Randy Orton. At this point in his career, Drew McIntyre was still a heel.

He spent the match forming short partnerships with fellow bad guys Orton and Corbin, only to turn on them with his vicious Claymore finishing move.

Near the bout’s end, Drew suplexed Bálor onto a ladder followed by a slam on Ricochet onto Bálor, until Orton’s RKO would take him out of the match as Brock Lesnar would escape with the briefcase.

4. RAW vs. SmackDown vs. NXT (Survivor Series 2019)

The participants were Drew McIntyre, Seth Rollins, Randy Orton, Kevin Owens & Ricochet for RAW ; Roman Reigns, Braun Strowman, King Corbin, Mustafa Ali & Shorty G for SmackDown ; Tommaso Ciampa, Keith Lee, WALTER, Matt Riddle & Damian Priest for NXT.

During the match’s first few minutes, Drew had the job of letting WALTER run wild on him before putting him away in controversial fashion with the Claymore. Later on, he’d stop the Braun/Lee tease before being a victim of Braun’s crazy comeback.

He finally teased “kicking Ciampa all the way back to NXT”, only to eat a Reigns spear and be eliminated. This entire match did a great job of putting Keith Lee over like a million bucks, despite being ultimately won by Team SmackDown.

3. Vs. The Shield (Fastlane 2019)

This was during a time McIntyre was feuding with the returning Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins was getting ready for his Universal Title clash with Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania, Lashley would battle Finn Bálor for the Intercontinental strap, Baron would wrestle Kurt Angle in his final match while Ambrose was on his way out of the company.

In what would be The Shield’s final match on PPV, Drew mostly went after Reigns to get the heat and almost got a count-out win over Dean, who eventually got back in just before ten after a Claymore. Drew would finally be the victim of a Shield Triple Powerbomb through a table, before the faces finished Corbin inside the ring for the win.

2. Bobby Roode (NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn 2017)

In 2017, Drew Galloway was signed back to WWE three years after being released. A former World Champion in companies such as TNA/Impact and WCPW, Galloway returned under his former ‘Drew McIntyre’ persona on the NXT brand.

At TakeOver: Brooklyn 2017, Drew challenged Bobby Roode for the NXT Championship, and was in trouble as Roode went after Drew’s neck. After his former finishing move, the Future Shock DDT, was not enough to get the job done, McIntyre captured the gold with a Claymore Kick.

McIntyre would hold the belt for a little over three months, dropping it to Andrade ‘Cien’ Almas at TakeOver: WarGames in November.

1. Dean Ambrose & Seth Rollins (Hell in a Cell 2018)

After his run in NXT, McIntyre made his return to the main roster after WrestleMania 34 in 2018. He joined forces with Dolph Ziggler and pretty much gave him a reign with the Intercontinental Title, before capturing RAW’s tag straps.

This was indeed one of the matches that put Drew over as a tough motherf*cker the most, overpowering both Dean and Seth while his partner DZ mostly struggled.

Drew would continue to dominate until the final sequence, which saw Drew break up Rollins’ Superplex + Falcon Arrow sequence on Ziggler with a Claymore mid-move, allowing Ziggler to land on top for the win.

WWF World Titles (1984-1990)

Welcome to my blog. This is the start of a new series, where I’ll be looking back at the history of WWE World Titles (not counting ECW) and ranking all the World Title reigns since the “Modern Era”. The “Modern Era” goes all the way back to the birth of Hulkamania in 1984, and that’s where we’ll end. Today we look back at the years 1984-1990, and we’ll continue to go back from here.

In front of my star ratings for the matches, you’ll either see “HR”, “R” or “RTA”. “HR” means the match is highly recommended ; “R” means the match is recommended ; “RTA” means recommendation to avoid. In case nothing appears, the match is watchable but nothing spectacular.

This is it. Without a doubt one of the greatest title reigns of all time, the one that created Hulkamania, which then resulted in the creation of WrestleMania. Hogan’s matches during this reign weren’t necessarily the best, but most of them are recommended if nothing else for historical reasons. The first three editions of WrestleMania saw Hogan wrestling three legendary contests, until dropping the gold to Andre the Giant to set up the tournament for the vacant belt at WrestleMania IV. No words can describe this reign, it’s without any question a perfect ten.

This happened just to set up WrestleMania’s tournament, as Andre tried to sell the belt to Ted DiBiase immediately afterwards and it was vacated. Just like that, it was over.

In the tournament at WrestleMania IV, Andre the Giant and Hulk Hogan were both counted-out and eliminated in the quarter-finals, while Randy Savage bested Butch Reed, Greg Valentine and One Man Gang to meet ‘The Million Dollar Man’ in the finals. During that match, while Andre was about to help Ted win, Hulk Hogan came out and helped ‘The Macho Man’ capture his first WWF Championship, forming the Mega Powers in the process. During the rest of his reign, the focus was more on the team (and Hulk Hogan) than on the title itself, until Savage turned on Hogan after he started celebrating matches with Elizabeth. During that short month as a heel champion, Savage did some terrific business on house shows, mostly clashing with Intercontinental Champion The Ultimate Warrior before dropping the belt to Hulk Hogan after a terrific match in the main-event of WrestleMania V. The house shows were a huge success as a heel champ, The Mega Powers are a legendary team still to this day, and the main-event of WrestleMania V was the most successful up until that point (and all the way until WrestleMania XIV in 1998) as far as PPV buyrates go. This was a fantastic title reign, and one that could’ve been perfect had the focus been on the title.

After Hogan captured the belt for a second time in the main-event of WrestleMania V from his former partner Savage, ‘The Hulkster’ went on to hold the strap for a whole year before dropping it to The Ultimate Warrior at the following year’s edition of WrestleMania. This reign wasn’t as spectacular as the first one – Zeus alone is enough to drag it down! – it was still great, and featured memorable matches against the likes of The Big Boss Man, The Genius, Randy Savage and, of course, ‘The Ultimate Challenge’ against The Warrior at WrestleMania VI. Hogan would drop the belt that night, and would only win it back the following year at ‘Mania from Sgt. Slaughter.

When Warrior won the WWF Championship, the company saw him as the next big thing in pro wrestling. Things didn’t exactly go that way, however, despite Warrior’s unique energy. The reign couldn’t have had a better start, with Warrior dethroning ‘The Immortal’ Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania, and later having a really solid Cage Match with Rick Rude, unquestionably one of his best rivals. However, business wasn’t exactly great, especially compared to recent years, and WWF decided to put it back on Hulk Hogan at the next WrestleMania via Sgt. Slaughter, who beat The Warrior at Royal Rumble 1991.

WWF World Titles – 1991

Welcome to my blog. This is the start of a new series, where I’ll be looking back at the history of WWE World Titles (not counting ECW) and ranking all the World Title reigns since the “Modern Era”. The “Modern Era” goes all the way back to the birth of Hulkamania in 1984, and that’s where we’ll end. Today we look back at the year 1991, and we’ll continue to go back from here.

In front of my star ratings for the matches, you’ll either see “HR”, “R” or “RTA”. “HR” means the match is highly recommended ; “R” means the match is recommended ; “RTA” means recommendation to avoid. In case nothing appears, the match is watchable but nothing spectacular.

WWF CHAMPIONSHIP

Sgt. Slaughter (January 19, 1991 – March 24, 1991)

At Royal Rumble, Slaughter took advantage of The Ultimate Warrior’s feud with ‘The Macho King’ Randy Savage to win the WWF Championship. Slaughter played the role of an American traitor in the middle of the Gulf War, and boy were people pissed in the audience! Slaughter transitioned the belt to Hulk Hogan, dropping the gold to ‘The Hulkster’ in the main-event of WrestleMania VII. Sure, he was just a good ol’ transitional title holder, but the role he had was not easy at all. Slaughter received legit death threats during his time as WWF Champion, and he had to wait in the arenas for hours after the shows were over to leave. He doesn’t get much love, but I’ll give him credit. He did a great job with what he was given.

Hulk Hogan (March 24, 1991 – November 27, 1991)

After dropping the title to The Ultimate Warrior at the prior year’s WrestleMania, Warrior’s reign wasn’t as big of a success as Vince McMahon’s WWF originally thought, and the company decided to put the belt back on Hulk Hogan the following year, via transitional champion Sgt. Slaughter. As champion, Hogan finished his feud with Sgt. Slaughter at SummerSlam before starting a feud with The Undertaker, who would win Hogan’s title at Survivor Series thanks to Ric Flair’s interference. Nothing much happened during this reign, as Hogan only had two feuds during his eight months as champion, but the reign wasn’t bad at all. It’s far from being Hogan’s best, but it was still quite good.

What If Edge Never Got Injured In 2003? – Fantasy Booking (Subscriber Edition)

Welcome back to my blog. This is a special subscribers edition article, which will be written by subscriber to ‘SmarKDown’ on YouTube, Aydan Myers. Enjoy, he’ll take it from here.

Back in February 2003, Edge suffered a neck injury that took him out of television until after WrestleMania XX in 2004. This article will cover what Edge would’ve been doing on SmackDown during the time he was away, ending at WrestleMania XX.

No Way Out 2003

Champions:

  • WWE Champion – Kurt Angle
  • WWE Tag Team Champions – Team Angle (Haas & Benjamin)
  • Cruiserweight Champion – Billy Kidman

The original plan for No Way Out was for Brock Lesnar, Chris Benoit & Edge to take on Team Angle in a six men tag match. However, that was ultimately turned into a handicap bout once Edge got written off TV due to the real injury. In this fantasy booking, Edge will be a part of that match and the babyfaces will still win. All three of them will do their finishers to Team Angle, and Brock Lesnar scores the winning pinfall over Shelton Benjamin.

PPV result: Lesnar, Benoit & Edge def. Angle, Haas & Benjamin in a six-men tag match

WrestleMania XIX

Champions:

On SmackDown following No Way Out, Edge and Chris Benoit form a regular tag team as they’ll be apart of the three way for the tag belts at the event. I’m sorry, Rhyno, you’re great but a Benoit-Edge partnership is simply better! At ‘Mania, the exact same finish will happen – Team Angle will steal the pinfall win over Chavo Guerrero after a Spear by Edge (in real life, Rhyno did it).

Backlash 2003

Champions:

Since Haas and Benjamin stole Edge and Benoit’s pin over Chavo at WrestleMania, they’re the ones challenging for the belts at the following PPV, Backlash. During the match, Team Angle use every heel trick in the book to take over the babyfaces, but Edge & Benoit manage to avoid them. In the bout’s final sequence, Edge goes for a Spear but Charlie moves out of the way and Edge has to stop before hitting the ref. That gives Shelton enough time to knock Benoit off the apron and cause a distraction, which allows Haas to deliver the LOW BLOW OF DEATH as they steal another win. After the match, Edge and Benoit deliver their finishers and stand tall at the end despite losing the contest.

Judgment Day 2003

Champions:

On the episode of SmackDown following Backlash, Edge & Benoit get another rematch but they’re still not successful. Just as Benoit has Benjamin tapping out to the Crossface inside the ring, Haas uses a belt to hit Edge on the outside and the ref calls for the bell just s Shelton starts tapping. The following week, Edge & Benoit team up with Rey Mysterio and Billy Kidman to take on the champions Haas & Benjamin and their partners, Matt Hardy and John Cena. A distraction allows Rey to pin one of the champions, and that gives Rey & Kidman a title shot against Team Angle at the PPV. Meanwhile, Edge & Benoit take on Los Guerreros, and they score a much needed win that puts them back in pursuit of the tag team straps.

Vengeance 2003

Champions:

  • WWE Tag Team Champions: The World’s Greatest Tag Team (Haas & Benjamin)
  • Cruserweight Champion: Rey Mysterio

At this PPV, WWE introduced the United States Championship on SmackDown. A tournament would decide the new title holder, with the final match taking place at Vengeance. These are the first round matches of said tournament: Matt Hardy vs. Billy Gunn ; John Cena vs. Rikishi ; Eddie Guerrero vs. Rhyno ; Edge vs. Chris Benoit. After a spectacular match, the tag team champions interrupt it (pissed off at being fired by Kurt Angle earlier on that episode) and cause a draw, meaning both Canadians are eliminated and restarting their feud. As far as the rest of the tournament goes, Hardy beats Billy and advances straight to the final match due to the draw, while Cena and Eddie best Rikishi and Rhyno respectively. In the semi-final match, Eddie takes advantage of Undertaker’s feud with Cena to win, and he wins the belt at the PPV much like he did in real life. Anyway, back to Edge! The heels try to avoid a title match at any cost, but finally GM Stephanie McMahon forces them to defent the titles. In fact, since they’ve retained so many times and they think they’re so good, she puts the titles on the line in a TLC Match. They have a wild match that is ultimately won by Canadian Aggression, with Benoit getting the win. After months of trying, they finally get a fair shot and they’re the new WWE Tag Team Champions.

SummerSlam 2003

After capturing the titles, Edge & Chris Benoit successfully defend them on each and every episode of SmackDown. Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin challenge the new champs for one last match at SummerSlam, which they immediately accept. However, the challengers only announce afterards that this will be a Falls Count Anywhere bout. Edge comes into this match with an injured knee, after the series of matches throughout the weeks. Near the end of this one, Haas puts Edge in a vicious leg crab (almost a version of Brock Lock perhaps) while Benjamin just holds Benoit’s legs to prevent him from breaking it up, and Edge has no chance but to give up the titles. After the match, Benoit tries to help Edge… but he simply snaps on his partner with a vicious beatdown that ends with a conchairto. Edge walks away from SummerSlam without the tag straps, alone and as a heel.

No Mercy 2003

On SmackDown following SummerSlam, Edge is booed out of the building and he snaps once more. Later that night, however, he steps into the ring with the WWE Champion Kurt Angle, and he steals a win after a distraction from Big Show (probably by count-out or a roll-up), while Benoit is out selling the angle from the PPV. The following week, Edge convinces Angle to put the title on the line, and just as he’s about to hit one last Spear… Benoit returns and appears on the ramp, allowing Angle to lock in the Ankle Lock on Edge’s injured leg, and he escapes with the gold. Benoit returns the beating afterwards, and that leads to a match between the two for No Mercy: but this can’t be any match, this will be a good ol’ street fight. After a bloody match between the two, Edge somehow manages to hit a Spear and he adds a conchairto to pin Benoit.

At No Mercy, Stephanie lost to her father Vince in an I Quit Match that made her lose the position as SmackDown’s GM. Vince introudced Paul Heyman as the blue brand’s new boss. Heading into Survivor Series, Edge and Chris Benoit were supposed to meet in a Last Man Standing bout, however, the heel GM Heyman declares Edge is unable to compete due to his injured knee and takes him out of the match… how convenient! Benoit instead joins Team Angle against Team Lesnar much like in real life, and he survives alongside John Cena.

Royal Rumble 2004

After more than a month away from action, Edge makes his return during the Royal Rumble Match as one of the bout’s final entrants. He runs wild for a while, but all he wants to do is to eliminate his former partner, Chris Benoit – who had entered at number one. However, Benoit manages to eliminate Edge to end their feud as Benoit goes on to win the whole thing and moves to RAW to have that classic with Triple H and Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania.

No Way Out 2004

On SmackDown after the Royal Rumble, Edge unsuccessfully participates in the ‘SmackDown Rumble’ to determine Brock Lesnar’s challenger at No Way Out, which is won by Eddie Guerrero. Edge manages to make the finals of a tournament to determine the number one contender for WrestleMania, however, with the final match to take place at the PPV. Edge is in there with Kurt Angle and they leave it all in the ring, with Angle Slams off the apron, Spears off the top rope and all that cool stuff, and Edge actually manages to score a clean win over Angle to win the tournament. Meanwhile, in the main-event Eddie Guerrero beats Brock Lesnar and the stage is set: Eddie Guerrero vs. Edge for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania XX.

We’re finally here. We’ve arrived at WrestleMania XX, “where it all begins again”. However, as far as this piece is concerned, it’s actually where it all ends! I’d keep the same result and pretty much the same match that Eddie had with Kurt Angle on this show, only with Edge in Angle’s place. I know we all loved that match and it hurts to remove that from history, but Kurt had already main-evented the prior year’s edition and he had already been in a classic with Chris Benoit at X-Seven. As far as Edge’s singles record at ‘Mania that far… he had fought over f*cking shampoo! Well, I say giving Edge a great match here would’ve helped him a lot despite the loss, and Angle would’ve just been fine no matter what – he was that good. After WrestleMania, Edge moves to RAW in the Draft as we finish this fantasy booking. I hope you enjoyed it!

WWF World Titles – 1992

Welcome to my blog. This is the start of a new series, where I’ll be looking back at the history of WWE World Titles (not counting ECW) and ranking all the World Title reigns since the “Modern Era”. The “Modern Era” goes all the way back to the birth of Hulkamania in 1984, and that’s where we’ll end. Today we look back at the year 1992, and we’ll continue to go back from here.

In front of my star ratings for the matches, you’ll either see “HR”, “R” or “RTA”. “HR” means the match is highly recommended ; “R” means the match is recommended ; “RTA” means recommendation to avoid. In case nothing appears, the match is watchable but nothing spectacular.

Ric Flair (January 19, 1992 – April 5, 1992)

Back in 1991, Ric Flair joined the World Wrestling Federation as the “real” World Champion, causing the WWF Championship to eventually be vacated in late 1991 by costing Hulk Hogan the belt against Undertaker at Survivor Series. The strap would then be on the line in the Royal Rumble Match in 1992, which Ric Flair won after entering at number three. That Rumble match is, without any question, one of the best ever done and Flair & Bobby Heenan’s work in that one will never be forgotten. As champion, Flair started a feud with the legendary Randy Savage, going after Miss Elizabeth and famously telling Savage “she was mine before she was yours” to set up their ‘Mania title bout. That match was absolutely incredible, and ultimately saw Flair’s own tactics getting the better of him. This reign was spectacular, despite the fact Flair only wrested once apart from his title win and loss. Anyway, this was still a memorable and quite awesome title reign.

Randy Savage (April 5, 1992 – September 1, 1992)

What a difference a year makes in wrestling – at the end of WrestleMania VII in 1991, Randy Savage was legit done as a pro wrestler. Eventually big stars such as Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior weren’t wrestling full-time schedules anymore, and Vince McMahon asked ‘The Macho Man’ to return – at the end of WrestleMania VIII the following year, he was beating Ric Flair after a classic match to once again win the WWF Championship. As champion, Savage retained the gold in a forgotten bout against Shawn Michaels in the UK, was apart of a spectacular (but ultimately disappointing since Warrior refused to turn heel) story with The Ultimate Warrior, Ric Flair and Mr. Perfect heading into SummerSlam. At that event, Randy had another fantastic match with The Warrior and retained despite losing by count-out, only to lose the gold back to Ric Flair just a few weeks later on Prime Time Wresling. He only wrestled four matches as champion, but damn they were all different and great in their own different ways. Plus, this reign was actually all about the championship unlike Savage’s first reign where the focus was all on the Mega Powers, and especially his partner Hulk Hogan to be quite honest. Another spectacular reign for one of the best years in the history of the company, scandals not included.

Ric Flair (September 1, 1992 – October 12, 1992)

Speaking of scandals, once all that got in the way the company had to put the belt on a clean babyface as soon as possible. The decision was for Ric Flair to win back the gold from Randy Savage to transition it to said babyface, a little over a month later. Flair only had the title for a short time as a result, and only wrestled one match during this reign as the title change took place at a house show. Unlike his first reign, there’s not much to say about Flair’s second. He did what he had to do, but this reign was never about him to begin with.

Bret Hart (October 12, 1992 – April 4, 1993)

When Bret Hart won the WWF Championship for the first time in his career, it felt different. And it felt good. Business was not good, the company weren’t living their best days and they smartly turned to technical wrestlng and brilliant storytelling inside the ropes. Sure, Bret was never the best on the microphone, especially compared to the other people in this list, but you can’t say he didn’t cover that up in his matches. All of his matches felt different, original and fit the opponent he was working with on that particular night. It was not easy to get behind Bret Hart as a babyface by listening to his promos, but once the bell rang and the way he sold vulnerability, agony and desperation, he could get it done that way. This reign was spectacular, and makes the end of WrestleMania 9 even more sad looking back after the great year that was 1992.
